Before and Afters

Before we updated the kitchen, we examined the changes that were needed, and what we had in our kitchen that was functional, even if it wasn’t our favorite.

1. The kitchen island has a wooden countertop that was so sticky due to the finish peeling off. It was so sticky that if you placed a piece of mail on it, you had to peel it off. It was also warped and too sticky to make bread on or function properly. This was the first investment we made for our kitchen, buying quartz countertops. *I say investment because they are expensive, and we had never bought or had quartz before. We plan to have them for many many years, so we went with a more durable option.

2. We had laminate counters that were warped, broken, and expanded due to water damage. When we removed the counters, we saw how much mold, damage, and spiders had infested the underside.

3. The sink, although hard to tell, had lost its lacker due to so many pits, scratches, and natural wear on the sink. Every time I cleaned it, it never really seemed clean. We were afraid of the bacteria growing due to it no longer have a finish.

4. Another issue we had was the microwave being so large that using our Dutch ovens and skillets was way more challenging than it should’ve been. It may not appear large, but you couldn’t pick up a skillet and pour its contents into another pot or skillet on the stove, the microwave was too low. It also had a light on it that would NOT turn off (we tried everything).

We wanted to buy a larger stove (in time), but wasn’t sure what to do with the weird space the microwave would leave. We would take out the little cabinet and thin cabinet, but then what? When I found our 1999 Elmira stove on Facebook Marketplace, it solved many issues, especially the microwave space.

5. The last issue we had was figuring out where to put my beautiful vintage hutch. In order for it to be seen, and work alongside our existing kitchen setup, we had to move the fridge. Bless my husband, he moved our washer and dryer to a new part of our house, moved the fridge where they used to be, but the hutch still didn’t fit. He had to move pieces of the cabinet over, slide our dishwasher over, and slide our sink cabinetry over in order for it to fit.
