Christian homemakers, stop comparing yourself to others. We are faced with a world where money, careers, and material goods determine how “successful” we are. What we have does NOT determine how God views us, and what our worth is to Him.
Let us pray that we can all break free from wanting worldly success. This “success” is leading us to yearn for what other people have, and compare ourselves to what others look like, and the things they possess.
Do NOT Covet (Yearn)
Exodus 20:17 reminds us, “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, his male or female slave, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
If we look at the definition of covet, it means to yearn after what one possesses. Take note of the word yearn. God goes farther than telling us not to physical steal from our neighbor, He is telling us not to even want or desire the things our neighbor has. Let us look at what God focuses on in the 10th Commandment.
- Neighbor’s House
- Neighbor’s Wife (their marriage, relationship, body)
- Slave (help – washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc., family, friends)
- Ox or Donkey (cars / vehicles / animals)
- Anything that Belongs to Your Neighbor
Reflect on if you are struggling in any of these areas. Pray that God would change your heart and mind to be set on him, and grateful for what you have.
Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
Galatians 6:4-5
Each one must examine his own work, and then he will have reason to boast with regard to himself alone, and not with regard to someone else; for each will bear his own load.
Proverbs 14:30
A tranquil mind gives life to the body, but jealousy rots the bones.
1 Corinthians 3:3
For you are still of the flesh. While there is jealousy and rivalry among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving in an ordinary human way?
Philippians 2:3
Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves.
Galatians 1:10
Am I saying this now to win the approval of people or God? Am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be Christ’s servant.
Romans 2:12
Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.
Isaiah 2:22
As for you, stop worrying about mortals, in whose nostrils is but a breath; for of what worth are they?
James 3:16
For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
Mark 8:36
What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?

Food For Thought
CHALLENGE: Instead of comparing yourself with others, compare who you are now to who you were before. Think about: How have you grown spiritually? How do you spend your time praying, talking to God, in your Bible compared to before? If things are not better off, think about ways you can improve and grow.
If when you compared yourself to others, and you got what you wanted, maybe a different body, hair, house, car, job, etc. Is getting this for the approval of the world or of God. Really think about it.
